allon area He should as he is claimed to be the third highest all time index bull of the United States but the catch comes in that he was sold to a California outfit before his potency was dis covered He had been used in the Oats Brothers herd for six years and left many high producing daughters and sons in Nevada which are now furnishing breed ing stock for Nevada and Califor nia dairymen One of the lucky producers to profit from the bull is Warren Miller of allon and also Harry Munk who has several granddaughters Munk is located in the lower part of the valley in the allon area Indices on bees of their pollen loads while permitting free passage into and out of the hive entomologists in California have compiled records that cast doubt on the familiar idea of the inveterate industry of these Insects Recording to a recent re port of the United States depart ment of agriculture When a bee is busy as a she is that way because abundant food supplies are available for har vest But when dearth occurs she takes life easier and does not bring home much pollen either for im mediate use or to mix honey for storage as bee bread To strip the bees of most of the pollen load two parallel strips of five mesh hardware cloth are placed across the entrance to the hives so that returning bees must make a turn between the strips to pass through the openings accord ing to rank Todd of the department of agriculture This brushes off most of the pollen which when weighed reveals that a strong bee colony will gather be tween 30 and 40 pounds of pollen a year The brood from which re placements develop require pollen for food and the birth rate appears to be limited by food supplies Trapping the incoming pollen will quickly reduce brood activity in the hive and in this experiment the sup ply of pollen either had to be brought in from other hives or else shift the traps to other colonies to maintain a running record of pollen collection It Is now that crooked keys tend to lower grade by United States department of agriculture experts One of the possible causes has been associated with roosting too early or not having the right kind of roosts The University of Wyo ming has looked this matter during a period of four years They found that turkeys roosting on a four inch pole roost show less breast bone indentation than those roosting on either one two four or six inch flat roosts or four and six inch roosts tilted at a seven degree angle Permitting the poults to roost as early as four weeks increased the tendency to ward dented breast bones Pole roosts were best suited for early roosting All the birds were sup plied with an adequate diet for normal growth and calcification of bones LOVELOCK HAY TERMED GOOD The 30 grazing service represen tatives from the nine there was an article concerning Mrs George Banks of Dunphy Nev and her hobby of raising decorat ing and collecting gourds Mrs Banks stated in a letter yesterday that she has received many letters during the past week asking for seed and instructions on planting and growing gourds She said she has plenty of seed but does not have time to answer all of the letters In her letter Mrs Banks states that she has a gourd that is known to be several hundred years old and she has placed it on display in Elko olden times in she states fought and raced crickets and this old gourd was used to carry a cricket It has tiny Chinamen on it and looks as if it had been carved but the history of the gourd says it was grown in a wooden mould This is probably the oldest privately owned gourd in the country practice of making the garden the source of food supplies as much as possible are the policies being earned out by Chandler and Ed win Dyer who three years ago bought the Teel farm of 122 acres southwest of allon in the Sheck ler district The brothers' had formerly op erated in Mason Valley and California Their mother is ing with them Only 30 acres of the place in cultivation It is largely tive pasture ground but this is being increased in production in part by planting Ladino and Strawberry clover Three to four acres of slought are to be leveled up next spring for Strawberry Seed mixtures already planted in clude Ladino and yellow sweet clover The versatile operations Include both dairy and beef cattle utiliz ing the pasture corn silage hogs with sugar beets and pumpkins grown in small areas for feed and a home garden have told us it pay to put in a garden but we know said Chandler Dyer who estimates that a little more than one acre reduced the home grocery bill by $200 for the year This does not include meat from calves and hams bacon and fresh pork from the hogs Dried golden bantam sweet corn preserved during a season is equiva lent to six cases if bought at the grocery store Mrs Dyer put up 300 pints of tomato juice superior to the ordinary cannery product and given extra delicacy with a touch of bell peppers 100 quarts of tomatoes 150 quarts of fruit and miscellaneous items The garden also put into the larder a quan tity of dried beans and a liberal amount of potatoes besides fresh vegetables during the season and rooted vegetables for winter use In the meat department of this home will be quantities of bacon and hams 10 gallons of mince meat and part of a steer killed on the place for corned beef The Dyer brothers sprang a sur prise when telling of their plans It is to head their Guernsey and Jer sey dairy herd with a Hereford bull the big they were asked you want milk cows to get steer calves for meat animals why you get a Dur ham or Shorthorn the brothers explain ed would still have a Jersey or a Guernsey steer for which you get much at the butchers but from a Hereford bull a Jersey or Guernsey cow will give you an animal that looks like a Hereford 'sells for the price of a Hereford and for all practical pur poses is a Hereford Not only that but the half breed Herefords will forage the rough pasture where the milk cows will not When it was hinted to the Dyer brothers it might be just an idea that work out it was de clared there is nothing new about the pldn Other dairymen have done it it was said After their milking herd was built up then when dairy heifers were needed for replacing the old dams Hereford bull was traded off one of a milking variety The best time of the year for the establishment of new lawns in Nevada is the early autumn Professor Billings of the University of department of biology said this week lawn planted at this time of year will get a good start before he stated will have the advantage of early growth In the Of first importance in looking toward a good lawn the Univerity of Nevada faculty man said 13 good soil the subsoil has been exposed by grading and is distributed over the area" he explained will be necessary to cover it with five or six inches of good topsoil does not pay to plant a new lawn on raw subsoil or any soil low in plant nutrients "Since much of the topsoil which might be used on lawns in Ne vada is low in organic matter and certain mineral nutrients It Is well to mix it into well rotted and aged barnyard manure at the rate of about one cubic yard to every 1000 square feet The manure should be well rotted since fresh manure is likely to contain many weed seeds with the manure" Bill ings stated "certain mineral fer tilizer should be added" To each 1000 feet he suggests applying seven pounds of ammon ium sulphate 45 pounds of treble super phosphate and 15 pounds of potassium sulphate although the potassium sulphate may be omit ted in preparing soils rich in po tassium The mineral ingredients are worked into the soil with the man ure by spading six to eight inches deep must be taken" the bot any instructor said "that the top soil which is added is not alkaline Some of the alkaline soils when damp have the appearance of rich soils but if a piece is al lowed to dry it will be covered in places by a whitish alkaline crust If the area to be planted has been recently filled it is best to wet the soil thoroughly and allow it to settle for two or three weeks he points out During this time most week seeds if any are pres ent will germinate and the young weeds can easily be eradicated by hoeing After the soil has settled it should again be rolled Ladak Alfalfa Tests Continue The grand champion cow of the 1910 Nevada state fair Is pic tured above later presented work involving the various branch es of range improvement manage ment lands operations and soil protection One of the most interesting and practical subjects presented at this conference was ield Method of Judging Range Utiliza by Milo Deming range ex aminer in collaboration with Hugh Bryan associate range examiner This method as presented by Deming for checking range utili zation has also been called the "Primary orage Plant Method" judging the use made of certain plant or in conjunction with other indica tors of range conditions wherein consideration is given to all the factors affecting the condition of any particular range being check ed under observation The obser vations recorded are plotted on a man of the area during the preced ing season The conclusions reach ed regarding the use just made of that range area are used in deter mining the management plan for the next grazing season In order to be of greatest value comparison of licensed and actual use on an area must be made While difference of opinion has been expressed between conferees on practically each subject dis cussed yet each one present at the conference appeared to feel that this method of judging range ultilization would serve as one of the most valuable range manage ment tools yet available to graz ing service personnel While this range utilization check method when practiced has immediate value to the adminis trator or examiner of ranges fol lowing any season of use the value of such periodic checks increased proportionally to the number of checks taken on any range over succeeding years There are numerous reasons why this method of checking range utilization will continue to play an increasingly important part in grazing service range management planning Perhaps the most de termining feature is that the of checking range use has been dispelled Now it will be pos sible to explain very easily to ad visory board members and other stockmen how range use is esti mated Such a procedure will as sist orderly approach to proper range use and a stabilization of the range livestock industry Pictured aboe is the grand champion Holstein bull Oats brothers of allon and before their ability to transfer high milking qualities were discovered In spite of the fact that the Reno city limits have practically caught up with Joe Garbarino he still manages to make a good profit on his six acres of farm land which is located southwest of Reno He has 75 head of hogs which he sells on the hoof or many years Mr Garbarino has raised goats with marked success He now has 11 nanny goats and uses the milk for home consump tion once in a while selling it on special order He also has several rabbits chickens and pigeons or a small farm Mr Garbarino says he Is getting very good returns One of the most remarkable yields of alfalfa on the Newlands project is reported to be the three year old stand of A Merritt on the south Vannoy farm south of allon There are nine acres planted and yielding about eight tons to the acre which is a rare yield equalled only in a few instances on the project The tuberculosis cattle test has been carried out as usual in Las sen county flocks in view of the international crisis He believes that a great rise in price and demand for wool is most ly a myth in spite of the fact that the United States is turning out thousands of uniforms and pasture makes grass Amer biggest crop harvesting methods and equipment have changed slowly At least the changes have been sloy in com parison with what has happened in the last 40 years in the produc tion and handling of such crops as wheat corn and potatoes Of late research and new devel opments on the farm itself make it look as if ways of harvesting the grass crop will soon be as modern as the vitamins the new 'methods help to preserve Grass silage and various meth ods of preparing it are already coming to be well known mostly in dairy regions And now the agricultural engineers and imple ment manufacturers are taking the out of the various op erations Engineers of the department of agriculture have al ready announced that to resist heavier side pressure silos for grass silage must be stronger than those for corn silage Grass silage pressures vary with the crop and its condition and may be from 10 per cent to 200 per cent than for normal corn silage Implement manufacturers too have been busy A new harvest ing machine mows and chops grass and elevates it into accompany ing trucks or trailers ready for the silo Another combination ma chine will chop either dry hay or Surplus Potatoes May Be Diverted A program for diverting surplus Irish potatoes of the 1940 crop into starch and dextrine was announced this week by the Surplus Marketing Association of the department of agriculture Under the program the rate of federal payment will be 145 cents per bushel (60 pounds) for Irish potatoes of his country No 2 grade or better diverted to starch and dextrine Total production of Irish pota toes in the United States for 1940 was estimated on September 1 to be 383172000 bushels a gain of more than 19000000 bushels over the 1939 crop and more than 16 000000 bushels over the average annual crop in the 10 year period 1929 38 Rust proved Valley ferent wheat conditions of soil and moisture supplies in the Carson Valley area and in each case the rust resistant varieties came through with bet ter yields than the non rust resis tant varieties Thatcher wheat recently devel oped as one of the most popular wheats in the middle west yielded a ton per acre or 33 bushels per acre on two field trials one of 19 acres and one of 17 acres One trial was made by Thomas Sum mers and the other by William White both reported that the crop was rust free fairly tall growing stood upright and had every ap pearance of being a substantial wheat This variety is a hard red spring wheat closely resembling Marquis in habits and appearance and is a cross from Marquis in developing a rust resistant strain The other variety tried was Komar which has already proved itself as a valuable rust resistant variety in 1938 One field trial of this wheat in 1940 yielded twice that of other non rust resistant varieties planted alongside of it in the same field This wheat also has been yielding at approximately a ton per acre right through the rust periods of the last two years and has never failed to make a better crop than other wheat dur ing this time Komar is a bearded type also bred from crosses with Marquis wheat The kernel is dark red but resembles Bart wheat in type and size Louis Stodieck and Bartels both produced a crop of this wheat in 1940 ire Protection To Be Discussed Livestock in the Ely region generally speaking were market ed earlier than usual this year due to the dry condition of the range in July and August with cattle in good flesh and the lambs some what lighter than usual Large numbers of cattle are now being shipped from the Cedarville Calif area while most of the cattle in the Pyramid district are now on pasture and some sheep are mov ing to fall ranges NEVADASTEER AUCTION HELD CLASS TO START A standard first aid class begin at Red Cross headquarters this Wednesday at 7:30 pm it was announced yesterday Classes will be held at this time also on Monday until further notice it was announced by Mrs Celestia Coulson executive secretary the chapter SILAGE TIP Alfalfa will make a fairly good silage provided it is mixed with some grass crop in about equal pro portions It is estimated that there are about 37000 tons of hay on hand in the Lovelock area armers of Lovelock state that this haying was the greatest in 15 years and with the result that sheep and cattle are being brought from the range at least six weeks earlier than usual and many buy ers are to be seen in the district surveying feed conditions for "fed cattle and the purchase of hay It is reported that there are more than 19000 head of sheep and about 3000 head of cattle on pasture in the Lovelock Valley at the present time This condition is generally prevalent late in October Some hay has been reported sold in the valley at around $6 per ton fed while prices reported for crop pasture ranges from seven to eight cents for cattle per day20 cents to 25 cents per head per month for lambs The $6 level for hay is lower than farmer expected and it may take a rise for the better later this fall armers in the Honey Lake Valley and Madeline Plain areas of Lassen county Calif have reported $9 and $10 per ton and this region also has an abund ance of hay this year It is report ed that the San rancisco price for alfalfa meal has been advanced to $1 Some baled hay is being sold by Winnemucca ranchers Hunters Return rom Northwest HAY HARVEST METHODS STAY
