Niman, a former justice of the peace, was temporarily appointed judge in September at a salary of $250 a week to fill in for G. L. Critchfield until a permanent successor could be found. Critchfield resigned just weeks after he was appointed by Mayor Jack Smith.

He said he stepped down to take a job out of state, but added that he was bored in a job that averaged about three cases a week.
