"Along about 12 o'clock last night it was getting pretty tight, but things look good this morning," McGowan, 65, said today. McGowan attributed the close race to a national trend of disillusion among voters with the Republican administration. "This year in particular," he said, "and I think it cut the margin down considerably." Both McGowan and Kruse also said hard campaigning was responsible for the tight race.

"I think it all boils down to quite a lot of hard work on our part," Kruse said of his tough challenge. Kruse also credited McGowan with being a powerful opponent. "But I love people and I love the State of Nevada, so I can't help but think I'll be back in politics again," Kruse, 28, said. Three incumbents, Secretary of State William Swackhamer, Treasurer Mike Mirabelli and Controller Wilson McGowan were re-elected Tuesday. Swackhamer and Mirabelli, both Democrats, scored easy wins, according to complete, but unofficial returns.

Swackhamer trounced his opponent Stanley Paher, a Nevada historian, with 106,611 votes, more than double Paher's 42,380 votes. This was Swackhamer's first election to the post after being appointed two years ago by Gov. Mike O'Callaghan. Mirabelli took an early lead Tuesday over Las Vegan James C. Kennedy.

Returns dhow 98,142 votes for Mirabelli and 50,327 votes for Kennedy. A much closer race was waged by McGowan, a Republican, who won his third term as controller over Tom Kruse. Gazette Carson City Bureau Dick Canatsey who is Gov. Mike O'Callaghan's pilot narrowly defeated Democrat John Meckes to become Douglas County sheriff, 2,276 to 2,154 Canatsey, a Highway Patrol pilot, will replace Sheriff Dave McCreary, who filed for the office, then withdrew. In other races, Douglas voters retained Republican incumbent Harry Winkelman as county assessor, a post he has held for the past 24 years.

The losing Democrat was Charles A. Zinke, 2,977 to 1,363. Matt Bernard, who upset long-time clerk-treasurer Earnhart Thran in the September primary, defeated Democrat Gerry Barone by 3,308 votes to 1 ,045. Incumbent Auditor-Recorder Pat Stanley got more votes than fellow Republican Bruce Reavis, 2,496 to 1,651, to win a second term, and Republican Garry Stone topped Hap Haight, 2,640 to 1,665, to take over the county commission seat now held by Roy Godecke, who did not seek re-election Voters also approved a local ballot question which would expand the county commission from three to five mem-bers They rejected another question which would have permitted the county to issue bonds of up to $2 million in value to pay for existing park and airport improvements and to construct a park at Lake Tahoe. out on the losing side by favoring KepuDiican Haroia Jacobsen over Democrat Gary Sheerin for the joint Carson-Douglas State Senate seat, 2,023 to 1 ,752.

Sheerin won, based largely on his majority from Carson voters. Both Carson and Douglas voters came out decisively for the re-election to a seventh term of Republican Assemblyman Lawrence Jacobsen, who was opposed by Merritt (Ike) Yochum of the Independent American Party, 3,190 to 1,054. In other local races, David Biggs was elected constable of the East Fork township over James A. Finch, and Glen E. Anderson bested Max L.

Jones for the job of justice of the peace from that township. Howard McKibben, seeking re-election as district attorney, was unopposed, as was Ninth Judicial District Judge Noel Manoukian. Clayton Johnson, Barbara Dowty, Timothy Heydon, and Nancy Gardner were elected to school board posts, with George Palmatier, Diane Strube, Doris Johnson and Fred McNeil coming out losers. In the District 3-B race for University Board of Regents, John Tom Ross was favored by 2,262 Douglas voters, compared to only 1,721 for Daniel Walsh. The race is being decided by voters of six counties, including Carson which gave Ross a 193-vote edge.

Prostitution passes in Churchill Citizens earlier had tried to put the proposal on the ballot via an initiative petition. Some observers consider Tuesday's vote to be a referendum, in part, on Commissioner John Hanifan, who refused to accept the petition. Legalized prostitution, the most controversial question on Tuesday's ballot in Churchill County, was approved by a 573-vote margin. Complete but unofficial returns showed the vote to be 2,367 in favor and 1,794 opposed to legalizing prostitution in the cow county..
