There's been a lot of talk about what ought to be the future of the Fairgrounds Fuji Park. That can't be addressed without also talking about the future of all of Carson City. City staff will recommend to the Carson City Board of Supervisors in August that the Fairgrounds be relocated and a park setting preserved.

WHY? The existing facilities are limited and the space needed for future facilities is inadequate A better fairgrounds facility at a different location can be developed with the proceeds from the Costco land sale together with the sale of the fairgrounds site A park setting will be preserved and improved for passive recreation The fairgrounds are now located in a prime location and are surrounded by existing commercial development Such a development could generate significant sales and property tax revenues for the benefit of the entire community WalMart's move to Douglas County will cost Carson City $1 million in sales tax revenue and threatens to force increases in property taxes The Fuji Park issue has been portrayed as an overnight development, but key factors have been in play for some time For more than a year, Carson City Parks Recreation Commissioners have conducted a Fairgrounds Relocation Study and has examined at least three potentially suitable sites Continued pressure to develop the fairgrounds site because of location, acreage, proximity to future bypass interchange, and the changing financial future is ever present. With 43 of the revenue needed to provide essential City services coming from sales tax, without a solid sales tax base service levels may be threatened. WHAT ABOUT HABITAT?
