It deals with dreams realized disappointments accomplishments that would have deterred timid souls and at pres ent 'the sponsoring of a plan to promote health and improved con ditions for the less fortunate home attthe lake was built by her mother and Claire has beautified the grounds and added artistic surroundings that make it unusual "Questions and answers flew thick and fast between the writer and this vivacious granddaughter of the pioneers of Carson City Matthew Culbertson Gardner and Helen Hoag (or Hoge) Gardner the latter a sister of Governor I foag of Texas and first cousin of Joe Cannon of Illinois long time Speaker of House of Rep resentatives Native of Maine Matt was bom and reared Maine and became engaged Helen Hoag of Virginia before first came West by wagon train in 1852 Passing through Nevada to California he soon returned to settle in Eagle Valley one mile south of ihe later site of Carson City Being from the state of Maine and familiar with logging and knowing its potentialities Matt had his eye on the stupend ous growth of timber on the east slope of the mountains He home steaded in the valley on two hun dred and forty acres of wikl gras producing land then turned ward to claim his promised in Virginia Acquiring cattle and sheep and giving much attention to his logging and lumbering inter ests first at Glenbrook and vicin ity and later on the mountains surrounding Tallac Lake Tahoe Mr Gardner was active eighteen hours a day and his wife was a helpmate one hundred per cent Interesting details concerning the logging is establishing the flume to float the logs down the side of the mountain to the outskirts of Carson City Gardner Senior and Rube Saxton and Mr Chubbuck built three mills and a i llroaci on the shores of Lake Tahoe from which point the logs were flumed mill processed 12000 feet of lumber a day nine logging wagons six oxen 0301 brought thj logs to the mill The first boiler Gardner brought to the lake eventually was bought Nevada' for her clever horsemanship ap pearing at State airs and rodeos Percy served as guard at the Ne vada state prison and held other responsible positions He married Gertrude Beardsley and their son is Percy Jr a mining engineer in Alaska Anyone familiar with western Nevada history ha: heard of Clara Belle beauty her talent her business achievements but it was her culinary art Jhat interest ed Dr Richard Hays MacDonald son of a San rancisco banker and a relative of Rutherford Hays who was a business visitor at the Gardner ranch on which occasion Clara Belle prepared and served the meals It was a whirlwind courtship and Clara Belle was overwhelmed with attentions Dr MacDonald had attended Heidel berg University in Germany and Yale and Harvard Western Pioneer Richard Hays fath er was a Early Memories Claire's earliest recollections of their Tallac Lake Tahoe home and of hunting wild strawberries and engaging in with her cousins and a German governess maintaining a certain degree of discipline A highlight of the day was the passage of the steamboat on its daily rounds boat of the Mac Donalds and its1 crossing of Lake Tahoe when a sudden storm near ly swamped it is a vivid recollec tion of The rocking was terrific so her mother pinioned her to the curved bottom with one foot while she managed ropes and wildly veering cntly Claire huddled in bottom not frightened storm but fascinated by the stem expression on her face Then it was she says she learned the difference between a play and a real mother Clara Belle and daughter Claire went to New York City and the latter was placed in a school where rigid discipline prevailed This irk ed the little miss and punishment did not deter her She already pos sessed initiative and she radiated with personality Her prayers at night were for baby brother dear Iler mother married again and when Claire was eight years of age her prayers were answered A son was born to Mr and Mrs Thomas an architect of Buffalo New York and who de signed the Carson City Post Office building and it was there Clara Belle met him After a splurge of speculation in real estate in Yon kers New York in which Clara Bclle'sjunds were disastrously de pleted the sought new business ventures A brief respite was furnished the daughter Claire when she was permitted to accompany her moth er and Dr O'Connor on a trip to Old Mexico Then Clara Belle trav eled in Cuba as the Cuban war had terminated and General Leon ard Wood granted her the rights of a wholesaler to place orders for soft drinks on a commission basis and this she did successfully An attack of yellow fever compelled her to return to the United States A trip to Jamaica to promote the sale of grapefruit in which?
