It Is Better To Have A Bank Roll And Be Called A Miser Than To Give It Away And Be Called A Sap Submitted by Mrs Piper 237 Street Reno WM SIXTY EIGHTH YEAR NO 231? journal GOOD MORNING The Weather Today Will Be Unchanged Yesterday: High92 Low Ji 3 ull Details on Page 8 ESTABLISHED NOVEMBER 23 1870 RENO NEVADA THURSDAY JUNE 29 1939 member op the united press associations 14 PAGES TODAY LOUIS WINS TKO IN OURTH Polish leet Army Mobilize or Danzig Crisis Kkchamp GOOD MORNING He's Innocent Police Angle Wrong Newspapers Guilty Typical Example By JACK RuhEDGE THE LAW IN the United States is that a man is innocent until he is proven guilty Unfortun ately this is often forgotten by over zealous officers who upon arresting a man upon suspicion hold him guilty until he proves he is innocent Innocent bystanders are fre quently arrested on suspicion held in jail and the news of the arrest gets into the newspapers through regular channels The innocent party finds his name blackened and not much he can do about it Newspapers strive to avoid pointing the finger of suspicion upon these unlucky persons or their relatives but sometimes they err unintentionally As a case in point there was a shoot ing recently in Reno It is still before the court so the only com ment make is this: A man by the name of William Bause was arrested and held in jail with drunks ani suspected andproven criminals? His only was that he was ironically shot at! He was the intended victim yet he was held in jail Not only that but it was said the reason for the intended shooting was that he was the in the case bcause he was alleged to be going with di vorced' wife Which even if true a crime In this case he says it true However the point mak ing is that the spirit of the law that a man is innocent until he is proven guilty should be ob served more closely We think the Reno police department errs any more frequently or more seriously than even the best in the country Everyone knows that in many cities suspects are subjected not only to humiliating third degrees but actual physical mistreatment and when they are eventually cleared of suspicion they even get an apology urther their names have been smeared in sensational news stories unjustly Reporters as well as the po lice should watch these incidents for a name is his most sa cred possession A SENSATIONAL case is now before the the Alderman Etting trial This further serves to emphasize the point we tried to make above Basically ex wife is suing Ruth Etting for stealing her husband But the case has taken all sorts of side roads has detoured into past love affairs and just about everyone except Prime Minister Chamberlain and his umbrella have been mentioned in some connection or other Yesterday it was brought out that Aiderman once kissed Dor othy Lamour the actress Why was this testimony necessary? It blackened Miss name it implicated her by innuendo in a case with which she had abso lutely no connection Maybe getting old and intolerant But we see the justice in things like that Torpedo Slips
